Judge hears arguments on if University of Missouri employees can bring guns on campus

Judge Jeff Harris heard arguments on whether the Board of Curators can ban professors from bringing firearms on campus. The judge said no additional hearings are needed and plans to come to a ruling.

The Attorney General’s office in support of a MU law professor, Royce Barondes, who wants to keep his gun in his car while at work.

In September of 2015, Barondes sued the university Board of Curators and former UM System President Tim Wolfe citing a ban to guns on campus violates state law.

Arguments in the hearing focused on whether the Missouri constitution applies on campus at the University of Missouri.

Attorney Eddie Greim, representing Barondes, said the Missouri constitution should apply.

“If the university wants to enact firearms restrictions we have to make sure there is a compelling government interest behind it,” Greim said.

Attorney Logan Rutherford, on behalf of the Board of Curators, said the university has the right to regulate and prohibit firearms on campus.
