UPDATE: Multicounty pursuit triggered by Cole County shots-fired call ends in Boone County
UPDATE 10 a.m.: A high-speed chase that ended on Highway 63 near Stadium Boulevard Tuesday morning started when Cole County deputies responded to a weapons violation earlier in the morning, according to the Cole County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they were called to the area of Charm Ridge and Charm Villa drives for a weapons violation around 3 a.m. Deputies received a call that a person from a light-colored vehicle shot at a darker-colored vehicle, and then both vehicles drove away.
Deputies said they spotted a light-colored vehicle matching the description provided by the caller near the area on U.S. Business 50. The vehicle did not have the correct license plate, according to deputies.
A deputy tried to stop the vehicle, later identified as a white Ford Focus with a Iowa license plates, on Business 50, but the driver did not stop and a chase was initiated, deputies said.
Deputies said the pursuit went down U.S. Business 50 to northbound Route T, then onto Highway 179. Deputies said the driver lost control on Highway 179 and went off the roadway, but managed to steer back onto the road and continued on the highway into Cooper County.
The chase continued onto I-70 in Cooper County, then onto Highway 63 southbound toward Jefferson City, deputies said.
The driver eventually stopped on Highway 63 near Stadium Boulevard, deputies said.
Deputies said two people were taken into custody without further incident.
Deputies searched the car and found two weapons, a 9 mm handgun and a 20-gauge shotgun.
Deputies said the driver, Denver Newland, 18, had five active warrants from multiple agencies and the passenger had one from Cole County.
The five warrants were for charges of driving while revoked in Gasconade County and Jefferson City, careless and imprudent driving in Jefferson City, and two counts of second-degree burglary, stealing and property damage in Cole County.
Both Newland and the passenger complained of neck injuries and were transported to the hospital, deputies said.
Deputies released the passenger from the hospital on their own recognizance. The driver was deemed fit for confinement and was taken to the Cole County Jail, deputies said.
Newland was held on the five active warrants, as well as waiting for the new charges to be filed from the pursuit. Deputies said those charges include driving while revoked, careless and imprudent driving, two counts of illegal possession of a firearm, failure to register a vehicle, resisting arrest and speeding.
The Cole County Sheriff’s Department thanked the multiple agencies that helped with the chase, including the Montiteau County Sheriff’s Department, Boonville police, Boone County Sheriff’s Department and Columbia police. Thanks was also given to the Jefferson City Police Department for helping with the investigation.
