During the surveillance, they followed the suspect to the Sky-Vu Motel and that’s when he fired shots at police with a rifle.

Two officers were hit by gunfire but are now in stable condition.

The suspect fled the area in a vehicle with another person, according to our affiliate KMBC. That vehicle and person were later found and the person taken into custody.

While police were canvassing the area of 30th and Topping, more shots were fired from a home and a detective was hit in the forearm. That officer is also in stable condition.

At 1:15 p.m., the armed suspect came out of the home and exchanged gunfire with police. He was shot and taken into custody. The Kansas City Fire Department later pronounced him dead.

Police are not actively searching for other suspects.
