Jefferson City considers “taking its own action” for Madison Street wall collapse
Over a month since the wall collapse on Madison and High Streets and there is no improvements to the building. The city is waiting on the owner of the building to decide the next steps.
Building Official Larry Burkhardt said the city is considering “taking its own action” if the owner doesn’t present a resolution by the end of the month.
Burkhardt said the owner is working with engineers and an insurance company.
The wall collapsed on June 7 canceling Thursday Night Live.
On June 20, ABC 17 checked in with the city for any progress. Burkhardt said the city was “waiting patiently” for the owner to decide what to do next.
The question still remains whether the owner will choose demolish the building or repair the collapsed wall. If he doesn’t communicate a plan to the city by July 31, the city is considering stepping in.
A woman who works near the building said she was downtown on the day of the collapse. She said she understands fixing the wall takes time.
“A new situation that Jefferson City doesn’t have very often,” Merideth Johnson said. “It’s not something they can fix overnight but I’m sure they’re doing they’re best.”
