July 4th is the busiest day of the year for fires
The State Fire Marshal urges people to err on the side of caution with fireworks tonight.
According to statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in the month of July, 250 people are sent to the emergency room each day.
Assistant State Fire Marshal, Greg Carrell said to always be careful when using fireworks.
“Even though the ground seems a little wet, there’s always a risk of fire,” said Carrell
Fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year, including 1300 structure fires, 300 car fires, and close to 1700 outside and other fires, resulting in $43 million of property damage each year.
Carrell explains the importance of watching your kids when they are playing with fireworks.
“We always give sparklers to kids, thinking they are a fairly safe firework. 1200 degrees. And again, so just think a little bit about what you’re doing. Try to keep the best safety in mind,” said Carrell.
Here are some tips from the State Fire Marshal on Firework Safety:
Confirm fireworks are legal where you live; purchase fireworks only from a properly licensed retailer. Only use fireworks in a large open, cleared space (nothing flammable). Keep young children away from fireworks. Have garden hose or bucket of water nearby in case of fire. Only light fireworks one at a time. Dispose of them by putting them in water and throwing them in the trash. Never shoot fireworks from glass jar. Never use fireworks while consuming alcohol.
