What’s Going Around: Fireworks injuries

It’s that time of year when fireworks are being set off left and right. It’s also the time of year when doctors at University Hospital see more firework injuries.

As of Tuesday afternoon, here’s been one report of someone being sent to University Hospital with a firework injury.

ABC 17 News spoke with Dr. Jeff Litt, who is the medical director of the burn center at the hospital. He says they see firework injuries the entire week of the fourth and even see some weeks after.

“People with burns on their face, on their neck, on their hands, you should probably be seen by a burn specialist just to make sure when they heal it doesn’t scar,” Litt said.

Doctors recommend not to hold a firework while lighting it. If someone is hit by a firework, doctors recommend putting lukewarm water on the burn to stop the burning process instead of putting an ice pack or cold water on it.
