Mid-Missouri Congressional delegates react to president’s executive order
So far, two Congressional representatives have praised President Donald Trump’s executive order to end the separation of families at the United States and Mexican border.
Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler said she’s hoping the legislature can fix the problem so that it’s “just and fair.”
Here is her full statement:
“I’m pleased that President Trump has addressed the upsetting issue of children being separated from their parents at the border. Although this practice has been going on since the Obama Administration and was put in place with the intent of keeping children out of adult detention areas for extended periods of time, it is clear we need to modify this policy.
“For decades, America has felt the repercussions of a failed, outdated immigration system that has rewarded those who enter this country illegally at the expense of those who have followed the law. It has been over thirty years since meaningful immigration reform has been signed into law and now is the time to fix this system. I am hopeful we can come together on legislation that fixes the problem and that is just and fair.”
Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer said he’s glad President Trump is “determined to actually address the problem” of a broken immigration system.
Here is his full statement:
“America is the most compassionate nation in the world, and I applaud President Trump’s action to keep families together at the border,” said Congressman Luetkemeyer. “Our immigration system has been broken for decades. While past presidents and many in Congress have chosen to use it as a political opportunity, President Trump is determined to actually address the problem. I am hopeful that when the House votes this week my colleagues across the aisle can put partisanship aside and do what is best for America.”
