Jefferson City “waiting patiently” on Madison street wall collapse improvement

Building Official Larry Burkhardt said the city is “waiting patiently” for the owner of the building on 200 E. High St. to decide what steps to take next.

“I think he is still trying to get enough information to make a decision and part of that has to do with insurance,” he said. “

Burkhardt said he hopes a decision is made by the end of this week.

“We are very anxious to have this cleared up,” he said. “We also understand it takes some time to make a rational choice.”

The building on the corner of Madison St. and High St. housed several law firms.

Burkhardt said he is interested whether the owner will choose to repair the building or tear it down.

“Contractors and design professionals are very reluctant to go into the building because the interior is not stable but the exterior is,” he said.

Jefferson City’s Thursday Night Live used to take place near the building.

Event Director Jill Snodgrass said this week’s Thursday Night Live will set up in the old location on the corner of Madison St. and High St. Due to the building collapse, they will set up the stage closer to the intersection in the crosswalk space.

She said this week’s theme is American Harley Davidson Bike Week. Snodgrass said they will have a bike show on the 300 block of High Street.

Thursday Night Live expanded their temporary open-consumption permit to accommodate event goers who want to walk over to see the bikes on High Street.

As for the retaining wall demolition on the 300 block of Monroe Street, the road is now open to traffic.
