Crews tear down Monroe Street wall
Construction Inspector John Voss said the city will send engineers to plan the next steps. He said the alley above the wall is shut down indefinitely.
“Part of that alley is falling in by taking the wall down,” Voss said. There’s nothing there but rubble.”
He said crews expected to find rock underneath the wall.
“They didn’t know what was back there but it doesn’t look like rock,” he said. “It looks a big old hole they filled up with dirt and rubble.”
He said this discovery can make reconstruction more difficult and potentially a longer process.
Darryl Thomas of Capitol Chiropractic Care said he is not surprised about the demolition.
“I think the wall over there on Monroe has been slowly crumbling for decades now,” he said. “I’ve been here for 30 years now.”
His chiropractic office is located Dunklin Street near the Monroe Street wall.
Crews plan to finish demolition this week and open the road of Monroe Street on June 22.
