UPDATE: Monroe street wall to be taken down

UPDATE 6/14: Jefferson City and the city’s contractor, Sam Gaines, will be taking down the retaining wall in the 600 block of Monroe Street.

Because of the construction, the alley parallel to the 600 block of Monroe Street will be closed starting Friday at 2:00 p.m.

According to the official press release, the 600 block of Monroe Street, between Hwy 50/63 and East Dunklin, will be closed from Monday, June 18 at 6:00 a.m. and will re-open on Friday, June 22 at 5:00 p.m. The alley will remain closed indefinitely.

East Cedar Way can be accessed from Madison Street. Property owners with drive access from the 600 Monroe Street can be accessed from Hwy 50/63.

ORIGINAL STORY: A retention wall on Monroe St. in Jefferson City has been shifting and rotating towards the street over the past six months, according to City Engineer David Bange.

“It appears that the top of the wall is rotating outward,” Bange said.

In a report to the Jefferson City Public Works and Planning Committee, Bange said he has measured the distance the wall has moved.

“In the worst spot, we’re looking at bout 3/8th, 5/16th of an inch,” Bange said. “The fact that it is moving or has moved certainly gives us reason to think about this a little bit more.”

The 20-foot concrete wall sits on the west side of Monroe St., between Highway 50 and East Dunklin St. Bange’s report will be addressed by the committee during their Thursday morning meeting.

There are no buildings that are directly affected by the shifting wall. The commuters on Monroe St. are the ones to worry about, according to Bange.

“The concern for us, if it were to collapse in some catastrophic fashion, would there be someone underneath it?”

This comes after a wall partially collapsed onto Madison St. Thursday.
