Heat and exercise: Knowing your limits

ABC 17 News exercised with the Columbia Fire Department to experience first-hand how exercising in the heat can impact your body.

Stephenson Crain with the Columbia Fire Department took ABC 17 Reporter Sasha Gomez’s vitals after exercising in the heat for 20 minutes.

Gomez’s vitals can be seen below:

Before exercising: 118/78 and a resting heart rate of 60 Ten minutes of speed-walking: 132/86 and a heart rate of 166 Ten minutes of high-intensity interval training: 142/88 and a heart rate of 188

“It’s very easy to not know that you’re reaching that limit — to not know that you overexerted yourself or that you’re approaching heat exhaustion or you’re experiencing heat exhaustion,” Fraizer said.

Officials said if you decide to work out outside during hot temperatures, it’s better to do so in the early morning or late in the evening with supervision.
