Fire on Highway 22 believed to be caused by train sparks

A fire on Highway 22 just east of Centralia is now under control, according to Lt. Michael Orth with the Lil Dixie Fire Protection District.

Orth said the call came in around 1:45 p.m. He said he believes the fire was caused by sparks from a train.

The fire spread into fields leading to several fires in a 5-mile stretch. The Lil Dixie Fire Protection unit also called in the Centralia Fire Department and the Boone County Fire Department to help with the rapid spread of the flames.

No one was injured in the fire, and it is not causing any traffic issues.
