Lawmakers react to Gov. Parson’s first address

Missouri’s 57th governor gave his first address to both chambers of the general assembly on Monday.

Gov. Mike Parson started his speech on a somber note. “I stand before you at a difficult time for our state,” Parson said. He picked up his tone by saying, “Today is a time for a fresh start for our state and to recommit ourselves – each and every one of us, including you in the galleries – we must work together for a better Missouri.”

Even some Democrats are saying the governor hit the right notes in his address in the Missouri House. Democratic Rep.Kip Kendrick of Columbia said, “If I were a speechwriter in his position, I think that was the exact tone I would have taken.”

The governor’s remarks come on the first day of his second full week in office.

Gov. Parson asked some questions that had overtones of issues that plagued his predecessor.

“Have we been respectful to our constituents, to our colleagues, and to our state? Have we acted morally and ethically? Have we honored the people of our great state who sent us here? How we answer these questions will define who we are,” Parson said.

He then moved on to more positive and encouraging words, words praised by Sen. Mike Kehoe whose name has been tossed out as the next possible lieutenant governor. “I thought it was humble. It was to the point and it was all about just trying to move Missouri forward and going on to the next step,” Kehoe said.

The Republican’s comments echoed the minority party, but Rep. Kendrick offered a reality check from his perspective saying, “This is nothing against Governor Parson; everything that he has done so far has been lauded, but it’s everything a governor should be doing. It’s really crazy how low the bar has been set. I hope we can raise that bar once again.”

Senate President Pro Tem Ron Richard, R – Jefferson City, said, “There is no one more prepared to take on this challenge. His strong dedication to agriculture and economic development will help us set the framework that will lead to a better quality of life for all Missourians.”

Attorney General Josh Hawley released a statement after the speech stating, “Governor Parson did a great job tonight and he will be a great governor for Missouri. I welcome his leadership in Jefferson City and look forward to working with him for the betterment of Missouri.”
