Auditor Galloway talks governor’s resignation, dark money

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway said the state was damaged far more than it needed to be through Eric Greitens’ refusal to step down at the urging of the Missouri legislature.

“There have been bipartisan calls for the governor to resign for some time now,” said Galloway. “He should have some of the integrity to resign months ago but now we have an opportunity to move forward and restore our reputation.”

Galloway said that the state government’s national and international image has been tarnished under the Greitens administration.

“Corruption got worse in Jefferson City under Eric Greitens and that corruption must be cleaned up and our state’s reputation must be restored.”

Galloway, a democrat, is running for reelection in August and said a major part of her agenda will be campaign finance reform.

“I’m deeply concerned about the influence of dark money, secret money and the ability for special interests and for donors to give anonymous political contributions to influence decisions made about state government, influencing policy and how taxpayer dollars are being spent,” said Galloway. “Just because the governor is resigning does not mean that the special interests and that dark money does not remain. They will still find ways to influence government.”

Galloway also praised the work of the Special House Investigative Committee on Oversight and urged it to continue.

“Missourians deserve a full accounting of the truth and full disclosure of the extent of dark money’s influence on state government,” said the auditor. “The General Assembly should take action to address this corrupting influence and continue, as it did with the Special Committee, to wisely exercise its oversight.”

During a transition of power in the governor’s office, it’s routine for the auditor to perform reviews of the executive’s and the lieutenant governor’s offices, but Galloway said in this case, it’s happening earlier than expected.

“The State Auditor’s Office performs closeout audits of statewide offices to assist in transitions and ensure that incoming officials are aware of areas for improvement,” said Galloway.

Galloway is expected to be the Democratic nominee in the fall 2018 election for state Auditor.

Currently, Galloway is the only democrat to hold a statewide office in Missouri.
