Pipe bombs, drug paraphernalia found in vehicle during Cole County traffic stop

UPDATE 3:54 p.m: Charles McBrearety is bonded out of jail.

Residents of Twin Bridges Mobile Home community told ABC 17 they sleep in terror at night, after learning their neighbor was in possession of four home-made pipe bombs two nights ago.

One neighbor told us, she’s afraid for her family’s life, “get her or any of the kids or any of us, it could blow up the whole park,” said the woman who wants to remain unidentified.

She’s now too worried to let her little girl play outside.

The Highway Patrol Bomb Squad confirmed these pipe bombs and highly flammable detonation cord are capable of doing serious damage; they can be made in the matter of minutes. They are the same type of bomb used in the Boston Marathon attacks.

Neighbors told us McBrearety’s house is just a couple doors down where neighbors say the drug deals happen.

The Cole County Deputies were patrolling the area all afternoon.

UPDATE 4:36 p.m: The Cole County Sheriff’s Department said it all started with a traffic stop on Heritage Highway near Highway 54 when suspect, Charles McBrearety sped out of his driveway almost hitting a patrol car.

Court documents claim deputies found meth and two pipe bombs inside the car during the traffic stop.

Shortly after, his wife, agreed to let them search their house, and found further concerning material.

“Two more pipe bombs, some detonation cord, and some more drug paraphernalia,” said Sheriff John Wheeler.

The Highway Patrol Bomb Squad arrived shortly after to help get rid of the material.

Wheeler told ABC 17, the possession of detonation cord is a felony. It’s a highly flammable cord used for explosives like pipe bombs.

He told us these devices were home-made and highly dangerous.

“With them being compacted and everything and you light the fuse, they blow up. Very dramatically,” said Sheriff Wheeler.

McBrearety told officials he made the bombs to use at the race trace where he works.

The suspect also has past charges on violation of a protection order, drugs, traffic offenses, forgery and theft.

Federal agents are investigating McBrearety who is already bonded out of jail.

ORIGINAL 9:44 a.m: On Tuesday evening, a Cole County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a car in the 7200 block of Heritage Highway for a traffic violation, according to a press release.

While the vehicle was being searched, with the consent of the subject, drug paraphernalia and two pipe bombs were found.

The subject’s home was then searched by authorities, and more pieces of drug paraphernalia, some detonation cord and two more pipe bombs were found.

The subject was arrested and transported to the Cole County Jail pending the following charges; felony possession of an explosive weapon, felony possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner.

The investigation is ongoing.
