Severe storms possible Saturday & Sunday

UPDATE 1:30 AM SATURDAY:

The latest forecast data shows an increased threat of severe storms for Mid-Missouri Saturday evening. The Slight Risk area has been expanded to include areas farther east and south and now includes Columbia, Jefferson City, Fulton, Mexico, Boonville, Sedalia and Versailles. Storms are expected to move in from the west after 7 PM Saturday evening and track to the east. Damaging wind and large hail are the main threats but a tornado is also possible. Storms are expected to be more numerous north of I-70 but could track as far south as HWY 50. Also, isolated afternoon storms are possible and could also be severe. Those with outdoor activities are urged to stay weather aware by checking the newest forecast here and seeing where storms pop up on radar using the ABC 17 Stormtrack weather app.

Although some areas of Mid-Missouri could be missed by storms this weekend, those that see storm development will need to watch for strong to severe storms. A warm front will lift north and through the state Saturday morning, ending up in northern Missouri by Saturday evening with an area of low pressure in Kansas. Areas south of the warm front will be in very warm, moist air.

Storms are expected to fire up in Kansas Saturday afternoon and track to the east Saturday night, closer to the warm front. Atmospheric conditions will be favorable for these storms to strengthen and become severe as they move in after 7 PM Saturday.

Areas north of I-70 have the best chance of seeing these storms Saturday night which could be severe due to very unstable air and moderate wind shear. Storms are expected to move in after 7 PM and track to the east through the late-evening hours and out by 2 AM. The main threat is strong, damaging wind gusts but large hail and an isolated tornado are also possible.

Heading into Sunday afternoon, spotty storms are possible ahead of a cold front which will move through. These could also become severe with the best chance north of HWY 50 where wind shear will be higher. Damaging winds and large hail are the main threats with these.

Those with outdoor plans are encouraged to keep an eye on the weather conditions this weekend and monitor radar for storm development. You can check radar and get weather alerts sent straight to your mobile device with the ABC 17 Stormtrack weather app. Also, watch ABC 17 News for updates on the timing of the storms and severe threat areas which might change slightly.
