CPD Chief says not in city’s ‘best interest’ to rehire Sanders after he admitted to public lewdness

Rob Sanders took the stand on Thursday, where both his attorney and the attorney for the City of Columbia questioned him regarding the use of force against Kenneth Baker on Aug. 2011.

Sanders admitted to making a comment after the shove to his colleagues saying, “Let’s just say he [Baker] lost round two.” Sanders said it was not a bragging comment, nor does he believe it was inappropriate.

Sanders was questioned about behavior on the job. Sanders admitted to public lewdness before and after being terminated. He said he engaged in sexual acts on the job prior to termination, but only during lunch hours. Sanders said he does not believe it was against the city’s policy.

Chief Ken Burton with the Columbia Police Department addressed exhibit Sec. 19-225 when he took the stand. He said ‘Guidelines for corrective action’ was one of the grounds for suspension and Sanders’ termination.

“It will not be in the city’s best interest to rehire Sanders,” said Burton. “Treating someone like a human being is expected.”

According to both Chief Burton and Rob Sanders, Baker was laying on the floor for about 12 minutes, handcuffed and in his own blood after Baker was pushed into the holding cell wall by Sanders.

The trial will reconvene tomorrow at 9 a.m.
