Boonville Animal Control breaks ground on new animal shelter

Residents in Boonville officially raised enough money to build a new animal shelter for the town.

The current shelter can only house about 15 animals at a time and is extremely cramped.

In 2016, a group of residents decided to start raising money for one that would be bigger and at a new location.

ABC 17 News spoke with Marcey Caldwell at the time about her efforts to raise the money.

“This is on the city’s agenda but it’s at the bottom of the agenda so hopefully with us raising money it will move it towards the top of the agenda,” she said in 2016. “I think with as many people who have given donations, who’ve come forward, I think they’ve spoken pretty loudly that they want a new location as well.”

As of Monday, the group has raised $50,000 to build the new shelter in the 1500 block of East Morgan Street.

According to Animal Control Officer Becky Keeran, the new shelter should feature 10 indoor and outdoor runs for dogs, a cat room and a meeting room.

It should be complete by September.
