Convicted murderer indicted in 1980s killing in Callaway County

A Callaway County grand jury on Thursday indicted a man who is currently in prison in a 36-year-old murder case.

Conrad Schmitt III now faces a capital murder charge in the 1981 death of Ricky Ridings. The indictment puts the time of Ridings’ death between June 30 and July 9 of 1981.

Schmitt is currently in the Southeast Correctional Center serving a life sentence for first-degree murder. A St. Charles County jury convicted him of the murder, along with the crime of armed criminal action, in 1998.
