Weather Alert Day expired for Mid-Missouri Thursday

UPDATED 2:45 PM THURSDAY:

The Weather Alert Day has been allowed to expire for Mid-Missouri, as the threat for severe weather has greatly diminished here in the region. Thanks to ongoing rain, clouds, and cooler temperatures the atmosphere hasn’t had time to recover from the overnight rain and storms we did see in the area. However, there is still a small chance for northern Mid-Missouri to see a strong storm as we head into the night. The Storm Prediction Center has most of Mid-Missouri under a marginal risk for severe weather, outside of northern portions of the region where a slight risk is in place.

Any afternoon showers and storms that impact the region will remain below severe criteria this afternoon, as some much needed rain continues to fall across the region. However as we head into the evening, a cold front will track through the region and bring a brief window for severe weather. This will primarily affect areas along and north of Hwy 24 and will be limited to damaging winds up to 60 mph and the potential for quarter size hail. The greatest threat exists after 9 PM and will carry on through at least midnight. With the current trends in place though, it wouldn’t be surprising to see all locations just see non severe storms through the night, as the greatest energy looks to be along the Missouri/Iowa border.

The rain will come to an end through the early morning hours into Friday. Most locations will see upwards of .25″ of an inch of rain to add to the .50 – 1″ that fell across the region through the night. This will bring all locations nearly double the rain we saw the entire month of April
