ORIGINAL: In honor of National Drug Take Back Day, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department will hold a drug takeback event on Saturday.
The department is partnering up with the Youth Community Coalition and law enforcement agencies in Boone County, including Ashland, Columbia, Centralia, Hallsville, the University of Missouri and VA Hospital police departments, for the event.
On Friday, there were two locations available for people to drop off unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions. Maj. Tom Reddin, of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, said that between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., the department collected 220 pounds of medication.
Reddin said he expects a lot more to be collected on Saturday because there will be more locations available.
The Drug Enforcement Administration cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous; no questions will be asked, according to a press release for the event.
