Public defender involved in two high-profile cases in mid-Missouri plans to retire in June

A public defender involved in two high-profile cases in mid-Missouri plans to retire in June.

Attorney Donald Catlett wants a judge to approve his request to stop representing accused killers Pablo Serrano and Ian McCarthy.

According to court documents, Catlett had open heart surgery Wednesday.

Serrano is accused of killing a man in Montgomery County and four other people in the Kansas City area in March of 2016.

Investigators say McCarthy shot and killed Clinton police officer Gary Michael Jr. during a traffic stop last August.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against both men.
