Boone County public safety agencies looking to hire

When Trevor Murphy returned to Boone County from the Army, he wanted to find a way to work with people.

Five years ago, he began work at the Boone County Jail.

“Some people lose their way, and I would like to help or at the very least, show them some dignity while they’re going through a very bad time in their lives,” Murphy said.

Murphy was one of several people that helped inform dozens of others about job openings in Boone County’s public safety agencies. The sheriff’s department, Boone County Fire Protection District, Southern Boone County Fire Protection District, 911 Center and Office of Emergency Management all participated at the department’s annex on County Drive.

Jail staff, which is run by the sheriff’s department, is seeking more than a dozen new hires. ABC 17 News has previously covered staffing issues in the jail.

The county jail recently brought back its control room operator position, which oversees the security cameras in the jail and works the intercom system when needed. Murphy said Sheriff Dwayne Carey brought the position back to get more people on board.

“[It’s] a good way to bring more people in who might not be as comfortable dealing with inmates directly, but still want to work within the environment,” Murphy said.

Recruiters for the 911 Center said they are seeking 9 new employees to take emergency calls.
