Columbia police arrest man accused of strangling another man, resisting arrest

Columbia police arrested Javante Commander on Monday after officers were dispatched to the Break Time on the Business Loop for reports of a disturbance.

According to court documents, the victim was unconscious and Commander was fleeing southbound on Garth Avenue.

Officers said when they made contact with Commander, he initially stopped but then refused to comply with orders to get on the ground.

Commander was accused of pulling his arms to the front of his body, despite officers commands for him to put his hands behind his back. Police said they had to use a taser to eventually get him handcuffed.

Officers said the victim was strangled by Commander and was still incoherent and only semi-conscious when officers made contact with him.

Commander admitted to officers that he got into a fight with the victim.

Commander was charged with assault and resisting arrest.
