UPDATE: One man killed in Cooper County I-70 crash

UPDATE 4:40 pm: Troopers said a 27-year-old man was killed as a result of the crash.

According to the traffic crash report, the crash happened when a Chevrolet stopped in the roadway due to a previous crash. The driver got out of his car and the Freightliner struck the driver and the car. The Freightliner then hit the guardrail and several trees.

Troopers identified the man killed as Alejandro Esparza-Cardona.

The Freightliner driver, Brian Tomlinson, had serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital.

Officers said both vehicles were totaled.

According to traffic cameras, there is significant traffic backup.
