One person taken to hospital after Boone County vehicle fire

UPDATE 6:43 P.M.: MSHP says the driver received moderate injuries. He was also arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

ORIGINAL STORY: One person was transported to University Hospital on Friday morning after a vehicle fire off Interstate 70 near the Midway Exit.

The Columbia Fire Department , Boone County Fire Protection District, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol all responded around 4 a.m. Columbia Fire officials say they found bystanders pulling the driver from a vehicle that had gone into a ditch. It was fully engulfed in flames.

An investigation found bystanders saw the vehicle in the ditch and worked to free the driver when it started smoking. The driver was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The Highway Patrol said troopers will return to the scene during daylight hours to further investigate.
