Columbia police searching for man accused of stealing more than $12,000 from homeowner

Columbia police are looking for a man charged with stealing more than $12,000 from a homeowner.

According to the probable cause statement, Scott Treffert entered into a written contract promising to do some roof work for a homeowner. Police said Treffert was the owner and operator of the Signature Roofing Company.

The homeowner paid Treffert a total of $12,257.20 in three separate installments. Officers said at least two of those payments were, for certain, deposited into Treffert’s bank account.

Treffert was accused of never doing any work on the homeowner’s roof.

According to the probable cause statement, Treffert’s current employment status is unknown and officers do not know where he is. Officials believe Treffert has fled the area and is currently residing in Florida.

According to the Better Business Bureau, the Signature Roofing Company has been rated an “F.” Two complaints were listed and detailed similar occurrences.
