Missouri house committee scheduled to hear school safety bill

Missouri House Committee on Homeland Security is scheduled to hear House Bill 2567 Thursday morning.

The bill would create a “school safety task force” to study school-based mental health service funding, staffing, standards, interventions as well as intra- and interagency collaboration. The task force would then report its findings and recommendations to the general assembly by Dec. 1, 2019.

The bill would also change the law regarding school safety training. According to bill sponsor, Rep. Chrissy Sommer, it’s currently optional for school districts to conduct annual active shooter and intruder response training.

HB 2567 would require every school district and charter schools to establish a school safety and emergency response procedure as well as an active shooter and intruder response training program.
