National walkout day for area schools for lives lost in the Florida massacre
Students across the country walked out of their classrooms today to show support for the victims of the Stoneman Douglas massacre.
The walkout was one month after the deadly shooting in Florida.
It was an emotional day for students who protested at Hickman High School. Although, some students told ABC 17, it was a waste of time.
Lexi Davis, a student at Hickman, told us, “we might not all have the right to vote yet, but we all have the right to go out and you know try to make a change, in any way we can, that’s what we did today with walking out.”
Hickman High School students gathered on the front lawn on the campus in central Columbia, reading the name and the age of each of the seventeen lives lost in the Florida massacre. It was followed by a minute of silence.
Another student told us the day was emotional. Katie Kim said, “I think another part of it was how long the list was, because just standing out here, with everyone in the silence, it makes you realize, I mean we know there were 17 lives, but it just seemed more real.”
Some students made shirts and posters. While others raised their hand after each name was called out, some hurdled in prayer.
Davis told me she hopes today’s protesting will ultimately end up in legislation, which would create measure that would prevent teachers from having guns at school.
“More guns in a school, just means, more accidents that are likely to happen because of the gun,” Davis said.
All across Mid-Missouri, students protested, and there were no signs of any problems.
