Columbia police arrest man accused of causing major crash at Vandiver and Paris intersection
Columbia police arrested Brandon King on Tuesday afternoon after officers were dispatched to the area of Vandiver Drive and Paris Road in reference to a vehicle collision with injuries and fire.
Multiple witnesses reported the driver was driving the wrong way, speeding and disobeyed a traffic light, which resulted in the crash.
Police said while King was driving, he began traveling into oncoming traffic and ran a steady red light at the intersection. After running the red light, King crashed into two other vehicles. He continued westbound on Vandiver and became airborne. After becoming airborne, King crashed into six more vehicles and came to a rest on top of one of the cars.
Officers said they suspected that King was under the influence and a test was performed to determine if he was. Officials determined he was under the influence of drugs and was unable to operate a car safely.
Police said as a result of the crash, four people were transported to a hospital for injuries. One victim suffered a sprained elbow, a second victim suffered bruises and soreness to her back and neck, a third victim suffered several broken vertebrae in her back and shoulder region and the fourth victim suffered multiple cuts to his hands.
King faces possible charges of driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner.
