Introducing ABC 17 Weather Alert Days

Mid-Missouri experiences a variety of extreme weather events and as a way to keep you up to date an informed, the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather team is introducing Weather Alert Days. This severe weather season you will see new specialized graphics and new wording from the weather team to inform you that extreme weather is likely.

What is a “Weather Alert Day?”

A Weather Alert Day may be declared when any of these weather hazards are possible:

Strong to severe storms Flooding Tornadoes Ice or snow Extreme heat & cold High winds danger Other dangerous weather that could affect your safety

In short, Weather Alert Days are issued to give viewers as much advance notice as possible of dangerous or extreme weather events. This is so that viewers can be informed, plan ahead, and stay safe. It’s drawing attention to days that severe or extreme weather is likely and using all our platforms to get the information out. Weather Alert Days will often be issued before the SPC or NWS issues watches or warnings, giving our viewers more lead time.

How Do I Know When it’s a Weather Alert Day?

We’ll notify you on-air, online and on social media. A Weather Alert banner will be posted on abc17news.com with additional information to keep you safe A Weather Alert box will highlight the day(s) of possible threats on the 7-day and weekend outlook. We’ll have special Weather Alert graphics to detail what the threats and timing for dangerous weather will be. We’ll use the app alerts to inform you of the timing, threats, and impacts.

Attached is an example of what a Weather Alert Day will look like on our 7-day. Keep in mind this is only an example and that no severe weather is forecast in the coming days.

With severe weather season here, the ABC 17 Stormtrack Team has been working behind the scenes on the ABC 17 Stormtrack Severe Weather Special. The special airs Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 6:30 on ABC 17 and 9:30 on Fox 22. This year, we are focusing on the threats we typically see during severe weather and how they form. We’ll also detail more about the Weather Alert Days and what they’ll mean for you.
