One Clinton police officer killed, two others hurt in shooting
UPDATE 4:40 pm: Troopers have identified the other two officers involved in the shooting.
A spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol said, “Officer Nathan Bettencourt is recovering from gunshot wounds and surgery at a Kansas City area hospital in stable condition. Officer Nicholas Kasper was also was treated for gunshot wounds and released from Golden Valley Hospital earlier today.”
UPDATE 2:30 pm: ABC 17 dug into Waters criminal history and found he has been in jail multiple times.
Waters is a convicted felon and should not have had a gun. He has been accused of robbery, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.
UPDATE 10:52 a.m.: Troop A has released the identity of the suspect that was killed on Tuesday night.
Troopers said James E. Waters, 37, from Clinton killed Police Officer Christopher Ryan Morton.
UPDATE 3:33 a.m.: Troop A has released the name of the officer killed. Police Officer Christopher Ryan Morton, 30, was shot and killed in the line of duty on March 6, 2018. Morton was a full-time Police officer from February 2, 2015 until January 10, 2017. He stayed with the department as a reserve officer until he returned back to full time on September 24, 2017.
UPDATE 2:49 a.m.: Two officers remain hospitalized, one listed with minor injuries and one with moderate injuries. Troop A said both officers were hit with gunfire during the officer-involved shooting.
UPDATE: 1:30 a.m.: Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A Sgt. Bill Lowe said around 9:20 p.m., Clinton County 911 received a call from a home near South Orchard and West Ohio Street. Lowe said two women were heard screaming in the background. When officers responded to the home, they were shot at from inside the home.
The officers engaged with the suspect, shortly after attempted to apprehend the suspect inside the home. At that point, one officer was killed and two others were shot.
The suspect remained inside the residence. Around 12:10 a.m., Troop A SWAT entered the residence and found the suspect dead.
Troop A Division of Crime Control is investigating the officer-involved shooting, including how the suspect died. Multiple agencies assisted the Clinton Police Department including the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Troop A, and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
This is the second Clinton officer shot and killed in the line of duty in the past year. Seven months to the day Officer Gary Michael was killed during a traffic stop on August 6.
Lowe said the department was familiar with the home but it’s unclear if the suspect was known the law enforcement. Lowe said the two women were not hurt during the shooting.
The name of the officer hasn’t been released yet. Lowe said the officer was with the department for at least several years ago.
“It’s hard to put into words what you go through when you have an officer killed in the line of duty,” Lowe said. “Then to have it to a department after a short period of time, that’s hard to wrap your head around.”
UPDATE 12:31 a.m.: The Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A confirms the suspect involved in the officer-involved shooting was found dead inside of the residence.
UPDATE 12:03 a.m.: The Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A confirmed Wednesday morning three Clinton police officers were shot at a home. One of the officers was killed. Two others were hurt in the shooting and treated for their injuries.

ORIGINAL STORY: According to law enforcement and WDAF, two Clinton police officers have been wounded after they were called out to a disturbance.
The shooter is believed to be barricaded inside of a home.
One officer has minor injuries, and the other officer’s injuries are unknown. This is where Officer Gary Michael Jr. was shot and killed in the line of duty last summer.
There are multiple law enforcement agencies on scene, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
