Gun bills at the State Capitol

Eight gun bills left some lawmakers pleased and some not as content.

House Bill 1936 was one of the eight bills mentioned that passed. Of the eight bills, three did not pass.

House Bill 1936 will add colleges and universities to the list of Missouri locations where people can carry a concealed firearm with a concealed carry permit.

The bill sponsor, Representative Jered Taylor, said the state government has authority over the local municipality and that they are the ones that give the authority to operate, so they set those guidelines.

“In my opinion, the municipality is overreaching their authority in banning the open carry of firearms and so. I think the state needs to come in and say, ‘Hey, you can’t regulate in this area, you know we already allow it in statute, so municipality shouldn’t be able to ban it,” Taylor said.

To become law, Bill 1936 will need to get through the full House and Senate before the legislature adjourns in seven weeks.
