Columbia police host active shooter training event

The Columbia Police Department and the ALICE Training Institute are teaming up to bring a certification course to Columbia.

The event is scheduled for May 3 through 4 at the Columbia Police Department Regional Training Center in the 5000 block of E. Meyer Industrial Drive. The price of the training is $595.

Police said the course is designed to teach proactive survival strategies for violent intruders or active shooter incidents. The goal of the program is to provide individuals with survival skills for critical moments in the gap between when a violent situation begins and when law enforcement arrives on scene.

ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate and is a useful strategy for everyone.

Those who attend the training will run through physical drills that compare passive and active shooters. Individuals who complete the course will be certified in ALICE and will gain access to exclusive ALICE resources.

The Columbia Police Department has two certified ALICE instructors who help facilitate trainings for local schools, churches, hospitals and businesses.
