Missouri GOP suggests George Soros is behind Greitens indictment

The Missouri Republican Party is calling Governor Eric Greiten’s indictment for invasion of privacy a “political hit job.”

Executive Director Sam Cooper suggested in a statement Friday morning that hundreds of thousands of dollars received by circuit attorney Kim Gardner from “George Soros groups” was her motivation for the indictment.

“We have a progressive anti-law enforcement Democrat wanting to single-handily oust a law-and-order governor,” said Cooper. “This law has never been prosecuted this way and it is safe to say if Eric Greitens wasn’t governor, it wouldn’t have been this time either.”

Billionaire and Democratic supporter George Soros has been touted as one of the most successful investors in the world.

Gardner’s office shrugged off the attack Friday. Spokeswoman Susan Ryan said Gardner is relying on facts and will not be playing “political games.”

“Both the governor and the victim deserve their day in court,” she said.

Gardner is a former Democratic lawmaker who served in the House of Representatives.

According to the Kansas City Star, Cooper is referring to a 2016 article from the St. Louis Post Dispatch about Gardner’s campaign contributions from super PACs with Soros ties.

The Missouri GOP’s criticism of the indictment stands in stark contrast to the dozens of GOP lawmakers currently calling for Greitens to resign. Republicans have already announced they are launching an investigation into the indictment charge.

Attorney General Josh Hawley (R) tweeted Friday morning that the indictment is a “serious matter” and there was no place for “party or partisanship.”

“The criminal justice system must be allowed to work,” he said. “I am confident the House’s investigation will be thorough and swift, and will proceed without regard to party.”

Governor Greitens has been accused of using “dark money” in his administration, which means the identities of his donors don’t legally have to be revealed.

ABC 17 News asked the Missouri GOP if it can confirm that Greitens never received money from any Soros-related groups.
