Multiple Callaway County residents receive calling scam

A scam has been making the rounds in Callaway County. According to the Callaway Sheriff’s Office Facebook, the scam involves “a call from a male subject proclaiming to be a Callaway County deputy,” and claiming that the recipient had ” a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear for Grand Jury duty.”

The post goes on to say that “the caller was attempting to resolve the matter by the call recipient making some fine payment over the telephone.”

Yet again, another telephone scam has surfaced around the county! Today, multiple citizens reported they received a call from a male subject proclaiming to be a Callaway County deputy. The caller advised the call recipient they had a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear for Grand Jury duty. Common with all telephone scams, the caller was attempting to resolve the matter by the call recipient making some fine payment over the telephone.

This is a scam!!!

On the occasions where a judge does issue some type of court order for a citizen failing to appear for jury duty, an official court summons is served upon the citizen, in-person, by a uniformed deputy operating a fully marked Sheriff’s Office vehicle. Failing to appear for jury duty is handled in the courtroom after service of a summons to appear —- not over the telephone.
