Rain and wintry mix this week

TONIGHT: South winds will continue at 12-16 mph, gusting to 25 mph overnight and will keep our temperatures mild, only dropping to near 60 overnight. Widespread showers are expected as an upper level disturbance sweeps through the region. Heavy rain is possible, with a few embedded thunderstorms through the night. Any rain we see will be beneficial to the region and will likely amount to less than an inch.

TUESDAY: Scattered showers and isolated t-storms will continue through the day. Rain will be the heaviest along and south of Interstate 70, where an additional 1-2 inches of rain is likely. High temperatures will occur in the morning, reaching the mid 60s before colder air moves in with northerly winds the rest of the day, dropping temperatures into the 40s by evening.

EXTENDED: The rain will end gradually as the moisture shifts to the southeast through Tuesday night. As colder air rushes in and temperatures drop below freezing, rain could change to freezing rain after midnight and into early Wednesday morning south of I-70. A glaze of ice is possible mainly on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses by early Wednesday morning with the best chance near I-44. Wednesday will be cold with high temperatures only reaching the low to mid 30s. Winds will shift ot the south and warmer air will start to move in early Thursday. There is a chance of a light wintry mix Thursday morning mainly north of I-70 and west of HWY 63 before temperatures make it above freezing. Afternoon temperatures will reach the low to mid 40s Thursday with rain likely in the evening and overnight. The rain continues on and off through Friday as temperatures climb into the lower 50s. With all the rain, there are some flooding concerns this week, especially where we see the heaviest rainfalls set up to the southeast. The beneficial rain could total as much as 5 inches by the start of next week, which would significantly help the drought.
