Man charged in Jefferson City shooting that injured one

A man has been charged with armed criminal action after a shooting on West McCarty Street on Jan. 30.

ABC 17 previously reported that Jefferson City police were investigating the shooting after officers found an 18-year-old suffering from a non-life threatening wound to the torso.

According to the probable cause statement, the victim told investigators that he and his friends were planning on purchasing marijuana from someone in the 1300 block of West McCarty Street.

The victim said during the transaction, Michael Zellman shot at him and was struck two different times.

Officers said they searched the area and found a mason jar with 91 grams of marijuana and a gun.

A witness told officers that people associated with the victim had displayed a gun when Zellman began to shoot. She said the victim fell to the floor with a gunshot wound and Zellman walked up and shot him again before calmly leaving the apartment.

Text messages from the witness’s phone indicated Zellman told her not to tell anyone what happened at the apartment.

A search warrant was granted for Zellman’s residence and police found him, a gun, ammunition and marijuana.

Zellman told police that he shot the victim because he was in fear of his life after seeing a weapon displayed.

Zellman was also charged with assault, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

Zellman has previous charges of burglary, tampering and robbery.
