MODOT crews monitor roadways in anticipation of winter weather

Missouri Department of Transportation officials announced on Monday that crews will be monitoring the roadways in anticipation of the winter weather.

Crews are currently taking stock of the amount of materials already on the roadways due to Sunday’s snow. They are treating areas where additional salt, beet juice and other abrasives are needed.

“We’ve got folks that are staffed at all of our buildings right now, going into early evening and overnight,” MoDOT Central District Engineer David Silvester told ABC 17 News. “We’ll be staffed at all our maintenance buildings in central Missouri.”

Light snow and the potential for freezing drizzle are forecast to hit central Missouri on Monday afternoon.

“Even a slight amount of precipitation can make for slick roads,” Silvester said. “We encourage drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time for their travels and drive for the conditions, which means lowering your speeds and keeping your attention on the task at hand, which is driving.”

Officials said crews will carefully monitor road conditions and are ready to plow and treat state routes as needed.

“As you get ready to go to work tomorrow, we encourage you to check our traveler information map. It will give a pretty good indication of that road you take to go to church, to go school, go to work, whether it’s on a covered status or whether it’s completely clear,” Silvester said.

MODOT crews remind drivers that bridges and overpasses experience freezing conditions first.
