Uncontrolled trash fire causes over 2 acres of grassland to burn

An uncontrolled grass fire resulted in over two acres of grass to burn off Route M Saturday afternoon, according to the Southern Boone Fire Protection District.

Chief Roger Jaeger said the dry conditions make it easy for fire to spread in this type of situation.

“It’s not red flag conditions because we don’t have strong winds, but it’s still dry,” Jaeger said.

No injuries were caused by the fire, but over two acres of grass was destroyed. Jaeger says it’s possible whoever did the trash burning was prepared, but then was surprised by the weather.

“They could have very well had a good area, but a piece of burning material may have blown out into the tall grass,” Jaeger said. “It’s hard to stop it then if you don’t have the equipment and tools to do it.”

Assistant Fire Chief Gale Blomenkamp with the Boone County Fire Protection District said grass fires are more common from January to April.
