UPDATE: Assault suspect arrested after standoff on Jewell Avenue in Columbia

UPDATE 1/27 9:15 a.m.: Police said they arrested Joshua James Fay, 39, of Columbia, in connection to a domestic disturbance that led to a standoff in the 1000 block of Jewell Avenue Friday night.

Police said they were called to the residence just before 5:30 p.m. for reports of an assault. Police said information they initially received was that Fay and a 28-year-old female victim were involved in a domestic dispute.

According to a news release, the victim told police Fay kicked her in the head, dragged her across the floor by her hair, choked her, twisted her neck and threatened to kill her before she was able to escape. Officers said they saw blood and scratches on the victim’s face and neck.

Police said while they attempted to contact Fay at the home, they heard what they thought was a shotgun being racked from inside. They said Fay was considered to be armed and dangerous so Crisis Negotiation and Special Weapons and Tactics teams were called to assist.

Police said after more than two hours of attempting to make contact with Fay, he eventually voluntarily surrendered and was detained without further incident.

Police said they arrested Fay for felony first-degree domestic assault.

UPDATE 9:00 p.m.: Police said the scene is being cleared and the area will be opened soon.
