UPDATE: Columbia man charged after large police response on Greensboro Drive

UPDATE 5 pm: Giger has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting or interfering with an arrest.

According to the probable cause statement, Giger had a history of assault with the female victim and had previously broken her arm when they got into an argument.

The woman stated she drove Giger to meet a drug dealer friend the day before and he had given Giger a shotgun.

Officers said when they arrived on scene, Giger locked himself in the house and refused to come out. Giger eventually walked out of the house but would not obey the commands of the police and resisted arrest.

ABC17 previously reported that police responded to the 1400 block of Greensboro Drive on Dec. 22 for an armed man experiencing a mental health crisis. Police have not confirmed if Giger’s arrest is connected to the incident.

According to the probable cause statement, Giger is a career criminal with an extensive criminal history.

ORIGINAL STORY: Columbia police arrested David Giger after officers were dispatched to a disturbance in the 1400 block of Greensboro.

Police said a female victim and Giger were in an argument when he got in her face, yelled at her and refused to let her leave the house.

The woman told police that Giger had been up for two to three days using drugs and she was afraid he was going to assault her.

During the argument, Giger went into the bedroom and racked a shotgun, police said.

Giger faces possible charges of domestic assault, resisting or interfering with an arrest and unlawful for certain people to possess a concealed weapon.
