Columbia’s City Council set to hear land annexation request
The Columbia City Council will consider taking in new land in the southwest part of the city for businesses. The measure is set to be introduced at the council meeting on Tuesday night.
There will be a public hearing where people will have a chance to speak their minds on the topic.
NGT Inc. wants the city to annex the 10 acres of land west of Scott Boulevard and Vawter School Road, on the north side of Brushwood Lake Drive.
The land would then be rezoned to allow for a neighborhood commercial center.
ABC 17 News has previously reported on other businesses that have eyed land in the largely residential area of southwest Columbia. Addison’s, for example, wants to build a new location on Vawter School Road.
The entire piece of the property is located in the area that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has flagged for flooding. Several planning and zoning commissioners had issues with that, and the board voted 4-4.
This proposal also comes as City Council members grapple with how to handle the growing west side of town.
Many council members have called for a large-scale study of the area around the Perche Creek area, and how that can be used in ways that make sense.
The City Council will also consider a deal with Missouri Network Utility Transport. The agreement would let the company use the city’s utility poles to place new terminals to boost cellphone data service.
