Dangerously cold start to the New Year

TODAY : A wind chill warning remains in effect for most of Mid-Missouri through noon, as wind chill values will approach -25 in many spots. Temperatures this morning are frigid, with many spots already seeing temps fall near -7 degrees. These temperatures accompanied with breezy northwesterly winds, are making it feel dangerously cold. Despite the sunshine we’ll see today, temperatures will only climb to about 10 degrees for most of the region. The entire day, wind chill values will remain near -10 degrees. Make sure to bundle up in layers if you are going to be outside, as hypothermia can easily settle in. Signs of hypothermia include confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, and muscle stiffness.

TONIGHT: Another frigid night is expected for Mid-Missouri, as temperatures fall near -5 once more. With wind chill values still expected to be near -20 in many spots, a wind chill advisory will continue through Tuesday afternoon for all of Mid-Missouri. We’ll see clear skies, with winds light out of the north up to 8 mph.

EXTENDED: Temperatures begin a slow climb back into the 20s as we head into the coming days, as upper level ridging begins to nose into the area. Even with this occurring, it will still be very cold in many spots. We are continuing to watch another cold front come through the area Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Frontal passage looks to remain dry at this point, but will bring a return to single digit lows and highs back into the teens. Headed into next weekend, there looks to be a warm up in store with temperatures finally breaking the freezing mark and a chance for some measurable precipitation.
