Ice possible today, dangerous wind chills this weekend
TODAY: Thanks to southerly winds through the day, we’ll see highs top out just below freezing for areas along and north of Hwy 50. South of Hwy 50 many locations will top out in the mid to upper 30s, beginning a thaw for the first time since last weekend. Through the day overcast skies will stick around, as a strong Arctic cold front is set to arrive by the afternoon hours. This front will bring the return for some of the coldest air Mid-Missouri has seen in quite some time. A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect beginning at 1 PM Friday and lasting through 1 AM Saturday. Initially freezing drizzle will be a concern, with isolated areas seeing up to .02″ of freezing drizzle, before becoming a wintry mix as we head into the evening. Where a change over of snow does occur this evening, we’ll see a dusting. This will primarily occur along and north of I-70.
TONIGHT: The freezing drizzle will have come to an end for many spots, with a changeover to a wintry mix. There is very little moisture to work with, so anything that occurs through the night will amount to a dusting. Lows tonight bottom out near 12 degrees, with breezy winds out of the north up to 15 mph. This will give way to wind chill readings Saturday morning near 0 degrees for many spots.
EXTENDED: Bitterly cold air moves in Saturday, dropping our temperatures from the low teens in the early morning to the single digits by afternoon as northerly winds increase to 10-15 mph. Low temperatures will drop to 0-4 degrees by early Sunday morning with wind chills as low as 18 below zero. We’ll stay in the single digits all day long Sunday with mostly cloudy skies. Some snow flurries are possible but at this time, no measurable snow is expected. As we ring in 2018, temperatures will be near 0, dropping as low as 8 below zero by Monday morning with dangerous wind chills as low as 20 below zero.
