Springfield man accused of raping, killing 10-year-old girl is asking for acquittal or new trial

Former middle-school football coach, Craig Wood, who was convicted of kidnapping, raping and killing 10-year-old Hailey Owens is asking for an acquittal or a new trial.

Attorneys for Wood argued that he did not get a fair trial in a motion filed earlier this month. Jurors found Wood guilty of first-degree murder in the 2014 death of Owens. However, jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision about whether to recommend the death penalty.

A judge is expected to decide on Jan. 11 whether Wood should be sentenced to the death penalty or life in prison. However, the judge must now rule on the motion for a new trial.
