Red flag warning issued to prevent fires during gusty winds
The National Weather Service in St. Louis issued a red flag warning due to low humidity and gusty winds in the surrounding Midwest areas on Monday.
Monday afternoon, Boone County firefighters responded to a fire on Creasy Springs Road in Columbia.
The fire department and sheriff’s office do not know the cause of the fire, but said it’s exactly why red flag warnings are in place.
Division Chief Jason Turner with the Jefferson City Fire Department said there are many ways a fire can get out of control, and cigarette butts seem to be a common problem.
With weather conditions like Monday’s, Turner said it’s crucial that people do not burn. No matter what kind of day, being aware of safety factors is imperative to avoid possible blazes.
“I think just following the simple safety factors (are important),” said Turner. “Making sure they are well away from any structures, make sure they have hose, garden hose available, a rake, making sure that the fire is attended at all times.”
Turner said last year there were four red flag warnings. As rare as they are, Turner said it’s important to heed weather conditions like those on Monday.
