Deer in rutting season, expected to impact drivers throughout November

Deer could soon become much more active and mobile, including on roadways, according to the Department of Conservation.

October through January marks deer rutting and mating season, and in the past that has meant more deer-involved car crashes. November has typically been the most active month in terms of collisions, according to the Department of Conservation.

If a deer jumps in front of your car, it is important not to swerve off the road. Attempts to avoid deer could pose an even greater threat to your safety than simply facing the deer head-on, according to the Department of Conservation.

Collision insurance might not cover the damage, says State Farm Media Specialist Jim Camoriano. “Collision insurance is actually for when you hit another vehicle,” says Camoriano. “When you hit an animal you must have comprehensive, or what we call other than collision.”
