Columbia police arrest man accused of driving his car into a building

Columbia police arrested Darrell Grimes on Wednesday after officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Ash Street, where the Phillips 66 Petro Convenience Store is located, in reference to a vehicle collision with a building.

Police said witnesses told them Grimes drove a vehicle into the side of the building, smelled strongly of intoxicants, begged employees to not call officers and drove away from the scene.

Officers said they found Grimes in the 300 block of Hirth Avenue and smelled intoxicants coming from his person.

Grimes was arrested and faces possible charges of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, driving while intoxicated, operating a car with a suspended or revoked license and duty to maintain financial responsibility.
