December temperatures make an appearance this weekend

You may remember the term polar vortex that became popularized a few years ago, following one of the coldest winters in quite some time.

While the term was popularized, the polar vortex has always existed and will continue to. Dips in the polar vortex are just becoming more common, leading to some brutal cold blasts. The polar vortex is nothing more than an area of low pressure located at both poles. It’s this area of low pressure where significantly cold temperatures can be found, that can occasionally track into the United States.

Thanks to a weaker polar vortex, Mid-Missouri is gearing up for the coldest temperatures in more than 7 months.

Strong polar vortex = good

Weak polar vortex = bad
